Call To Action

from strikeisaverb.net:
This morning before rush hour, teams of activists, many from Occupy Wall Street, in conjunction with rank and file workers from the Transport Workers Union Local 100 and the Amalgamated Transit Union, opened up more than 20 stations across the city for free entry. As of 10:30 AM, the majority remain open. No property was damaged. Teams have chained open service gates and taped up turnstiles in a coordinated response to escalating service cuts, fare hikes, racist policing, assaults on transit workers’ working conditions and livelihoods — and the profiteering of the super-rich by way of a system they’ve rigged in their favor.

On the day of Ahmadinejad’s address to the United Nations, several activist groups from across the United States and Canada, including UASDI and New York’s SCADI, joined in front of UN Plaza during Ahamadinejad’s speech to rally and protest against rights abuses. From there, many continued once more to the Hilton to make heard the voices of the Iranian people.
The rally saw performances from musician Rana Farhan, as well as a public painting “session” by artist Soheil Tavakoli. Many signed postcards to be sent to UN officials demanding accountability for rights abuses, freedom for prisoners of conscience, fair trials and due process, and a special envoy be sent to Iran.

The sheer scale of the floods in Pakistan is staggering and the country will need all its available resources to help it recover from this crippling crisis and to fight long-term poverty.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) - the institution that oversees debt repayments - can play a key role in this. Ensuring all of Pakistan’s debt is frozen for 2 years would mean an extra $6 billion available to help those affected.

FUCK THIS!!! When Pakistan stops harboring Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, then maybe we can think about helping them!! Until then, fuck ‘em!!

Yes, because the millions of people suffering because of the flooding are all in support of terrorism, and we know that because they’re Pakistani! I’m so glad that citizenship is such a convenient way for us to know what people believe and support, that way we can punish them further when their homes and livelihoods are destroyed!
I’m so glad there are sensible, moral people like you around. Really. We definitely need to distance ourselves more from Middle Easterners and make it known that we think they’re all horrible people who deserve every bad thing that happens to them, because that will certainly help us accomplish our goals in the region. Kudos to you for being so politically saavy.

Purnimaya Lama’s husband, Arjun Lama, was taken by the Maoists on 19th April 2005. Witnesses say he was held for 2 months and killed. Despite Purnimaya’s campaign for justice, the police have failed to arrest anyone for Arjun’s killing.

During the 10 year war in Nepal over 1,300 people disappeared at the hands of the army, police and Maoists. Not one person has been prosecuted for the grave human rights abuses that took place between 1996 - 2006 in Nepal.

This film was made in Nepal to coincide with the International Day of the Disappeared 2010. The film features one woman’s story of her loved one who was kidnapped.

Video and Photography by NayanTara Gurung Kakshapati. Produced by Kari Collins.

TAKE ACTION.

This video breaks my heart. I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose my husband in such a horrific way and have to live without justice.

PLEASE REBLOG this and send an email calling for an investigation into disappearances and murders committed during the conflict in Nepal. Thanks, lovelies.

At a time when the country desperately needs more jobs, a powerful commission appointed by President Obama is meeting in secret to make recommendations to lower the federal budget deficit.

And, unfortunately, the commission has been stacked with people who have obsessed for decades over cutting Social Security benefits or transforming it from a broad-based program into a privatized retirement program…

Sign our petition to the members of the deficit commission telling them to make recommendations that significantly lower military spending, allow the Bush tax cuts for the top 2% to expire, and modify health care reform to include a robust public option to lower costs.

Today, we should not be cutting the deficit but instead investing in critical public goods that create jobs. After we strengthen our economy, it is appropriate to focus on lowering the deficit.

A US campaign ‘Weekend Without Oil’ to raise awareness and education about oil dependency.

CALL TO ACTION
On August 21st and 22nd, commit to these 11 actions!
Walk or ride your bike:
Avoid using cars and if you must, always try to carpool. Transportation accounts for 40 percent of our petroleum consumption and is easily one of the biggest areas we need to improve upon.
Enjoy the outdoors:
Avoid buying new sporting equipment, since oil makes up nearly 25% of rubber. Footballs or basketballs, for example, can last for many years and used equipment is often just as good and will reduce demand for oil needed to make new rubber.
Use reusable bags:
Avoid disposable plastic. Plastic bags are a huge waste for very little benefit. Nearly 10 percent of U.S. oil consumption, approximately 2 million barrels a day, is used to make plastic products alone.
Be conscious about what you eat that weekend:
You can reduce oil demand by changing your diet to eat less meat, more local foods that require less transportation and organic food, which doesn’t use petro-based fertilizers.
Don’t buy new make-up that weekend:
The majority of cosmetics are petroleum-based, including lip gloss, face powder, nail polish, and more. So avoid buying new make-up products this weekend and research the brands when you purchase in the future.
Drink tap water:
Avoid beverages bottled in disposable plastic, they make up nearly 1.5 million tons of plastic waste per year, so get a reusable bottle and fill it up.
Make your electronic gadgets last:
Avoid buying new electronics. Electronics take a lot of oil to produce and the gadgets you already have can last much longer than the rate at which new ones are released.
Go to the movies or stream them on Hulu:
Avoid buying new DVDs/Blu-Rays, as oil is a key ingredient in their production, packaging and shipping.
Skip buying new clothes that weekend:
Swap clothes with friends or check out the local vintage store. The less new clothes you buy the less oil is used in the manufacturing process and transportation.
Head to your local library or read online:
Avoid using a printer and buying printed material including daily newspapers. Printing doesn’t just waste paper, nearly 100,000 gallons of ink each day is used on daily newspapers alone.
Spread the word!
Get 3 friends to sign the pledge and help raise awareness on ways they can help reduce their dependence on oil-related products.
